E.s.l.
I have to stop listening to NPR (National Public Radio).... tonight they discussed the HUGE problems with finding ESL teachers..... drum roll..... English as a Second Language.
Apparently there are a gazillion latino's in North Carolina and they won't speak english so it is our job to help these kids. The school districts that don't step up will lose funding, etc... "we need to figure out how to not let these kids fall between the cracks".
HEY PACO - HOW ABOUT SPEAKING ENGLISH!
Just seems funny how none of the parents of these kids speak english (hence the kids not speaking english), so now it someone else's problem.
I sound like a grinch.... ahahha.... EVERYONE IS A VICTIM...except me damnit!!!!!

Education knows no boundaries.
If those kids want to learn, they should be given every opportunity to do so. ESL, when done right, should be every bit as important as any other classes. Kids learn REAL fast, and English is not the most difficult language to master.
I learned my English with GI Joe and Transformers

Mingster is right, whoever wants to learn, they should be giving the chance to learn..!! Even they wanna learn some other languages, they should be giving the chance..!!
don't forget this, America is not built only by American..!! never forget who built the rail road...etc
don't just look at what you got in the front, but be thoughtful why you gtt so many good things in the front.

The Schools/ Education System take the blame and the parents don't ever bother learning to speak english, discouraging (in my view) the kids from learning.
I have a vietnamese friend who has lived here for 20+ years. My kids as 3 year olds could speak better english than his parents can after 20 years. If the parents aren't willing to help why should the schools take the hit?

surely the problem isn't as simplistic as you deem. there are many reasons why people that live in our country don't speak english, and it's probably fair to say that the older that person is, the less they can be held accountable for the lack there of. meaning, that the opportunity to learn esl wasn't as prevalent then, as it is now. so, until it was mandated that all children at the age of _ must attend school, how could these people learn english?
i think that something should be done to assist these kids in learning esl, and if we have to pay for it, so be it. in the long run, it'll prove to be beneficial to the country. a language barrier is a unfair, and unnecessary way to determine demographics. someone had to teach you english, but that was facilitated because they already spoke the language. it'll be a lot smarter for you to teach Paco english now, than for him to be stickin' yo' ass up for your wallet, and a bag of cheetos later.
