I had the older Sony Fontopias and they were great for the price.

However... if you are unwilling to spend more just DON'T ever check out more expensive phones. I'm using Etymotics ER-4P's now and they are awesome. But my wallet is $150 lighter!

I have tried several different types of high performance earbuds . . . none of them hold a candle to these, which are about $15-$20:

Koss - "The Plug"

Sound and comfort are great!

active noise canceling or just noise isolating/in ear?

I have some Sennheisers that were around $50 on Amazon and I love them. I've used them on planes, in the office, and even to help me sleep when people nearby were being loud. They have been awesome for everything.

I just bought new IEM... shure se215. Check out the reviews for this 'phone.

There entry level but they have a fun sound. They run for ~ $100. The se 215 have the same design/build as shure's top of the line IEM se535.
