Early Mid-Life Crisis
So here I am, 30 years old, been in accounting for almost 10 years, and the firm I work for is going under. I've spent the past four weeks looking for a mid/upper level acct/finance position, and the response has been almost nil. I know the economy is kind of soft, but now I'm considering a change in careers. Statistics say that the average person changes careers 3-5 times in their lifetime, right? It's discouraging, to say the least... man, I just don't know what to think anymore. I'm a really ambitious person, but, to be honest, I haven't been in this position before. It drives me crazy not going to work everyday (I work less than 10 hours a week currently as my employer winds things down). So I shoot out a couple apps/resumes a day, and wait, and wait. Needless to say I cruise these forums a lot more now... but I really need to be out earning a living! Sorry to dump here, I was just doing some reading on the boards and thought maybe a few of you can relate and offer some insight. With the anniversary of 9/11 coming up, it puts things in perspective and I know things could be much worse (as they are for the many, many families personally affected by the attacks last September).
The good news is that my wife and I just found out we're going to be having another baby (my daughter is 19 months old)! I'm really happy and wanted to share that with all of you! I wish I had some cyber-cigars to pass out!
Thanks again to everyone on this board. I think I'll go and wax my S now. Kind of therapeutic.

i am sort of in the same situation. I am very ambitious and worked in the IT industry for the last 7 years. I moved up the ladder pretty quick and with 9/11 impact got burned and our company went down and under. At this time i am finding a lot of job for mid 50s and lows 60s and honestly that is not cutting it. I want to reinvent myself and do something I will truely enjoy. Now only time will tell. I am into cars, so i am visiting europe and the mb/bmw factory and possibly look into importing stuff for the cars. I just hope i am able to make decent living and be happy at the same time. It's really a scary time and the economy is not giving me any hope.
Best of luck to both of us.
Congrats on the baby on the way.

Most of us can relate to what you're going through. Job security is pretty much an illusion. The right thing will come along and you'll know it. Everyday we face change so we might as well welcome and enjoy it.
You're blessed with a wife and kids. Congrats!
Self-reflection always comes up at a milestone or turning point in life. Take stock in yourself and count your blessings.
Don't look to your neighbor or anyone else and wish you had what they have - money, sucess etc. because there's always problems in every person's life you just don't always see it. And if everything IS perfect, it never stays perfect.
Be mindful of your thoughts, don't dwell on the negative. Too many things to be positive about!

Lucid/Raja: I knew there was a reason I felt compelled to post this topic tonight... I sincerely appreciate your shared experiance and words of encouragement. It seems that all to often it's easier to see the negative things that surround me, and not the good that I need to be more aware of.
What is this thing we call life? Complicated stuff, I tell ya!
Raja, good luck in your possible venture!

Just be careful you and I live in one of the more expensive cities in the state.
So you know I did what you are contemplating, straight up quit my job for a dream. I fell straight on my face, so I found a different style of work, took a small hit in my salery but the stress levels went down and the enjoyment of work went up. I could not be happier.
And I would repeat what lucid said but he has much better grammer then me.

StormBringer: Yeah, no kidding on the expensive city part! On the same token, I really can't imagine living anywhere else (not that I wouldn't if I had to). Sun and surf in SoCal is the life... but a good job here never hurt!
Is there any SD meets coming up? I see a few locals posts but have never met any of you.

We have meets occationally here, the irvine scene is quite a bit better then the san diego area. Bu I am always down to go for a run up palomar or the like, check out this sites club area for socal and www.s2ksocal.com in the events forum, lots of stuff to do.
As for san diego, I can't imagine moving anywhere, and due to my job limitations its san diego or the bay area for me. I hopefully will be moving downtown in the next few months, can't wait its in the gaslamp quarter my favorite part of the whole county.
Also my car is really easy to spot, white with red interior with the biohazard badging, I run around mira mesa and the merge area all the time, wave if you see me or come on over and we can talk, I never turn down the chance to talk to anther owner.
