I want to get your opinions on using my dad's diamond, which looks very bling bling after a thorough cleaning at Mayors, on a new, modern platinum setting. Acceptable compromise?

sure acceptable.. but i think taking hte stone out of hte original setting (unless the setting is completely trashed), takes away the essence of the tradition..
personally i kinda like antique diamond rings.. i think they are cool
don't get me wrong.. my dream ring is a Tiffany's traditional cut and 6-point setting.. either that or an antique ring..

but that's just my humble opinion...

I would also add that if you are looking for a bargain, you would do well to stay away from Tiffany's. I paid 8 grand for a solitare necklace at Tiffany's a couple weeks back as a gift. I could have had the same thing for about 2700 total by purchasing the rock from a place like http://www.bluenile.com/ and the necklace from a jewelers catalog.

Is the name that important? To some it is I guess.
i having that dilemna now. do i go for the tiffany or do i buy the better quality no name one...
or is it possible to buy a tiffany ring setting and buy my own diamond and have it put in?

Give her your Mum's ring... that's really awesome that you have that opportunity!

I helped pick out my ring though... I really wanted a wide band... wasn't too worried about the size of the diamond... just wanted to make sure that it didn't stand up off the band or I'd catch it on EVERYTHING... and hey... if ya' gotta wear it everyday it has to be functional with your routine... like doing your hair and not yanking it out with your diamond. Anyway... we bought a tension ring so the diamond sits down inside the thick band... it's beautiful, but not a whole carat... i think it's a little bigger than 1/2 carat....

Gees... when girls start talking about their diamonds...

Traditional
