Enough is Enough. Time for a new PC. Please Help...
So, I've finally had it with my current dinosaur... I mean, PC. Any suggestions for sources, brands, features, etc?
I'm not too much of a 'gamer' and I get enough at home that I don't need streaming porn on my desktop at all times.
I'd like to keep the price as low as possible... say under $1000, $1500 tops. (Montior, prineter and other peripherals are NOT needed!)
I don't need the latest, greatest, fastest machine, because it will only be obsolete when I take it out of the box. I burn CDs, but do not intend to become "Senior Spielbergo" with crazy video editing, etc.
I think there are enough people in the know on this board to save me some time, $$ and aggravation in my search.
All ideas and comments are appreciated.

I used to like to DIY but Dells prices are just too low.
I got a 2.53 GHZ P4 with a DVD+RW for 450.00 Dollars just 2 weeks .
Go to www.gotapex.com and scope out the current and previous deals.

Buy a $400 - $600 Dell. Processor speed really isn't all that important these days unless you are a gamer, graphic artist, or run some type of simulation software. Get plenty of memory and a decent size hard disk, and of course a fast network connection!
Resist the tempation to "go bigger". Rather then spending an extra $200 - $500 on a better PC today, save that money and replace the less expensive one you will buy instead sooner.

We just got a 3.02 GHz Pentium 4 from Dell; my wife has been complaining that I haven't gotten to bed before midnight for the last several weeks because of the analysis I've been doing for our new website, so she put the package together. Last night I was in bed at 10:30.

When I get home I can get you the details.

DELL!
Just make sure that if you get a system with XP on it, that you have at least 256MB of RAM! 128MB doesn't cut it very well, and even someone who wants a computer for general-purpose use will notice it.

I wouldn't buy a PC today with less than 512 MB of RAM. My home machines, B&W G3 Mac and AthlonXP 1900+, have 768 MB and 1 GB respectively.
Dell is good and I agree that it is cheaper to just buy a Dell as opposed to building your own. That said, I enjoy building mine and when it comes time, I'll probably build my next one. It's fun and I get to choose exactly what to put in it.

I hate to jump on the DELL band wagon, but ... DELL!!! I've DIY, bought a gateway and later upgraded, a no-name and later upgraded , compac (now HP) and my last purchase was a DELL w/XP 12 months ago. The DELL has been far superior to all the other brands.
If you've got $1,000 to spend, put some money into upgrading the memory, HD and processor speed.
