Expecting parent...
You might go ahead and grab a car seat and take it with you when you're looking at cars to see how it fits. Our car seat for my 5 month old daughter will only fit in the middle on my civic without hitting the backs of the front seats. It works, but it basically makes the back seat unusable for anybody else but my daughter. Some strollers can also be pretty big and you might have trouble fitting them in the trunk, which can obviously be solved by getting a smaller stroller, but it's something to keep in mind. Our stroller is nice because she can stay in her car seat and it clicks into the stroller, but that makes it big. Fits great in my wife's pilot but won't fit in my civic's trunk.
With two boys (ages 4 and 5) I'll put in my $.02 on mini vans. My wife was never a mini van girl. She had a 2 door Merc coupe and swore she would just simply upgrade to a sedan. Now she owns a Honda Odyssey and would not trade it for the world. I've even got to say I'm very pleased with it. We went with the touring model which has navi/rear back up camera/dvd player/etc. the best thing is the automatic doors/rear hatch. You have no idea how nice that is to be able to pop the sliding doors/hatch in the rain carrying two kids while running to the car. Its also got crazy space and the touring has the V-6 with eco mode which cuts out 3 cylinders while cruising. I get about 22-23 mpg on the thing which ain't to shabby.
2 months before we had our newborn, we traded in a sedan for a small SUV, cx7. My personal experience till now, if you can get a mid to large SUV, go ahead and get it. With all this TX heat, small SUV is not good. No A/C in the back, so you have to wait for it
If I had the $$, I would've gotten a cx9.
Our baby is 10 months now, and with the weight difference, we're glad we got the cx7.
To me, sedan is PITA to get the baby in and out. Stroller and other things are ok, but you and your wife's lower back wouldn't be so happy.
I was thinking of getting a minivan, but my wife was extremely against this too. Maybe if we have 2+ babies, but for now (1), it's all good.
Hey OP, a little coincidence

sadly, i've moved on from the S2000 into something that doesn't have a rear seat as well (cayman). its getting ready to be sold.

i'm trying to make the case for an odyssey, but the wife refuses to even go look at them or anything that even resembles a minvan.
i'm the planner out of us two, and i suspect her back will get sore putting a kid into a child seat in a sedan, and eventually she'll complain and want an SUV. i also suspect that she'll also complain about an SUV and eventually want a minivan when she's preg w/ kid #2 (if things go according to "plan") while trying to put kid #1 into either a baby seat or booster or something. the planner in me says, skip the two spending mistakes and jump straight to the minivan, purely out of convenience. anyways, congrats to all the other fellow expecting fathers. and special thanks to those fathers who are sharing their experience w/ us expecting fathers.

Really? Congrats man!
