The best meal I've ever had was $250/person at a Shabu Shabu restaurant.
i mean i know japanese food can be overpriced and all, but i cant see it costing more than $40 a person tops, and it should come with all u can drink sapporo and sake.expensive isnt always better, however, sometimes i rather pay extra to know what i am putting into my body is lean meat. sushi for example is never cheap if its fresh.
but cheap places are good too, for example burritos are one of my favorite foods and its cheap!!! same with pasta!!!
I agree that just because it's expensive doesn't mean it's going to be good.
Taste is subjective...
I will say that some of the best food I've ever eaten...was very expensive and that when it comes to food....I spare no cost. The cost of the dish does not effect my decision to order it. You only live once and eating is one of the few things in life that if you can, make it a pleasurable experience.
Cost should NOT always be associated with how the food is going to TASTE. Sometimes you are paying for the QUALITY, sometimes your paying for the DELICASSY, and sometimes your paying for the environment or attention to detail in the preperation.
There is a time and place for expensive food. If the time is when you want large quantities of highly fat food....then maybe expensive gourmet dishes prepared by a chef is not the place to eat.
Dining is an experience.. it can be made to serve it's purpose to fill your stomach or it can be made to accomodate more than just your taste senses.

I find that a meal with friends at a local wings place tastes better/is more satisfying than some expensive place thats quiet and draws little lines on the plate with various sauces and dressings.
Then again i'm very easy to please.

Try eating at French Laundry in Yountville near Napa, CA and then TRY posting here telling me it is crap! A 9 course meal for 2 people is about $500 without wine purchase.

im sure many will adamantly disagree and say that i must have never had real good food. but for the most part, I find the best food to be cheap, messy and not served on fancy plates. i'll go so far as to say that i regret eatin expensive foods cuz the portions are usually tiny and it's just not that good or downright bad. there are of course the rare exceptions like well cooked prime rib.
point of the thread is that it really bugs me to hear sycophants saying the food is excellent just cuz it's highly rated, expensive or cuz everyone else says it is.
anyone agree

maybe you don't know how to appreciate good food. This is not knocking you.
I don't appreciate beluga caviar. That stuff taste like crap. Just b/c I don't appreciate it doesn't make it crappy.
