$10 per person, usually picking up dinner. Don't care about ambience. Pure nourishment and basic greasy spoon. Chipotle, Gyros, Jimmy Johns, etc. (Honda Civic).

Except Chipotle is the Cadillac of take-out.

There again, why am I going to a Taqueria part-owned by McDonald's when I could go to a Taqueria wholly-owned by los locales?

And yeah, crap. . . you don't even need to hit French Laundry; as I was saying elsewhere, you can even get to The Farmhouse Inn and get a "decent" meal.

There is no comparison in any way shape or form!
None of the Chipotles are even franchises, they are all company owned stores.

but for the most part, I find the best food to be cheap, messy and not served on fancy plates. i'll go so far as to say that i regret eatin expensive foods cuz the portions are usually tiny and it's just not that good or downright bad.
And people don't go to a bar for the quality of the drinks.
And people don't go to a club just for the quality of the music.
So don't tell me atmosphere isn't important in entertainment. Some people dine for entertainment, not just for filling their bellies.
It was interesting that all I remember from our most expensive meals is that I enjoyed the evening with my wife.

I don't know that you can make a sweeping generalization about it.
i prefer non-chain restaurants myself. i worked at a "nice" class restaurant (had a mix of upscale nice dining with standard american fare out back at the patio bar) and the food was great. alot of the food i eat nowadays i actually compare to that place b/c i thought the food was so fresh and good....but i do agree that you really can't generalize about places to eat. high end places can go both ways just as much as the small hole in the wall places.
