I cant do this without the parents, so cosigning is not a possibility.

So is it worth it to try a credit union?

So far I've applied to Bank of America, Capital One, Wachovia, and Chase!!

So without a cosignee or long history, I need to wait several more years to get another S?

I guess I can wait to buy it outright in cash, but this was supposed to be an early bday gift to myself.
Its worth it to try any number of places. The worst they can say is no. Credit union may be your best bet though.

Its my understanding that if you apply at numerous places for the same type of loan(in a given amount of time) then it only counts as one ding. Thats how it works for car insurance at least.

The rule is 30 days, so hurry up and find a loan. As a former CU employee I agree that you'll have more luck there.

Also, FWIW, Jesus parks his POS down the street from my office:

i never got why credit unions are more lenient than the big time banks. you would think a bank like chase or bank of america have so much more spending power than a credit union, they they would be the one who would be approving more..

Your college may have a credit union. They may give you special consideration being a student there.

Try dealers if you can find a deal. With 10k down most would be doing everything they can to get their banks to give you a loan.

Just be careful

A bank is a [big] corporation whose goal is profit -- they are typically adverse to high risk lending. A credit union is owned and controlled by its members with the goal of providing those very things -- reasonable interest rates and financial services -- to other members regardless of risk (to a point). Banks are in it to make money.. credit unions are theoretically in it to help members.
