Another great sci-fi book is Inherit the Stars, by James Hogan...I usually recommend it right after Ender's Game .

Ooh, Snow Crash is another good one...cyberpunk. Blanking on the author right now though .

I would have to agree. He gets a lot more into politics now that the story has evolved...more action needed! I'm working on the latest book right now.
