Fed up with my Job
Like the title says, I'm sick and tired of my job. I was in Exec Dev, then moved to Compensation, now I'm a Project Manager. I've been with the same company for the past 10yrs and I'm bored as all hell. I make decent money and the job isn't particularly stressful.
I think I'm just at that point now where I need to make a HUGE jump and get into something more meaningful/fast paced. Something more intriguing. I've just been too lazy to get my ass out there looking for something new.
Well, I just got my kick in the ass (someone I mentored is making major $$$ and I'm stuck here). I'm soooo rusty at the whole networking game as I haven't really needed it .
What advice do you guys have for getting the ball rolling? Especially considering I haven't been in touch with a lot of my higher up contacts in the industry. Would feel kind of strange calling them up out of the blue and immediately asking for a reference, etc.
What do you think? All advice welcome. I'm in the planning stage as we speak.

I'm in the same boat. My job is very easy (IT for a law firm) but I dont make great money. I'm bored most of the time. I've been doing the standard website job search engines, but no go. 90% of the jobs on there are sales crap. The only people that contacted me through there are insurance companies and commision based job opportunities. I'm finally about to get a new job here soon hopefully (fingers crossed) as I have just finished the final interview with a company and they're calling my references today. I'll be a project manager if I get it. I got my foot in the door b/c a friend of a friend works there. So far, all my jobs have been that way. You pretty much have to rely on networking to get you anywhere these days.
My job is boring, why do you think I have posted so much today? It pays poorly, but I am not that motivated to leave. Why????
Fantastic retirement benifits will speed my retirement by 10 yrs over another job, and 6 weeks of paid vacation per year which gets boosted every few years.
I don't need a rewarding career in terms of huge money, prestige or even a challenge. I am able to pay the bills, and take lots of time off and retire early. Those who take the opposite route, it all depends on what you like.
I do know very few people who love their job, which would be ideal of course, but many who have swithced jobs for something else, many have made more cash but not been any happier, so don't expect that will happen automatically. But there is nothing wrong with making more cash if your job is going to suck anyway.

How would go about contacting a potential reference when you haven't talked to them in over 4 years? She's a VP at another huge firm and we used to get along quite well. I've since moved my department twice and stupidly failed to keep in touch with her.
I've been trying to figure out a way to get back in touch with her without seeming like I'm just calling her because I need something.

Call her and exhange pleasantries for a bit and then explain why you are calling. Instead of saying you need a reference or are looking for a new job, put it more like "I'm looking for some career direction and I thought that you would be the right person to offer some advice."
Worth a shot. She'd probably be flattered that you approached her.

I'm looking to get back into Exec Dev. I'm also considering Strat Analysis/planning. I need something that has more of a consultant type job description. A position that requires you to right the wrongs within a company.
