I've been practicing Ninpo Tai Jutsu for close to 10 years. Ninjustu technically is a family within the system. It is not an art in and of itself. Well, I guess it could be, but there is so much more.
this is the thing that gets me the most, all the ninjitsu guys saying how they can remove eyes and break bones and dim mak, throat strikes and groin strikes, small joint manipulation pressure points and all their deadly attacks.
in reality, trying to do these things rarely works. we have had ninja guys come into to train with us (bjj) and they immediately start with the pressure points, doesnt work. adrenaline and basic strength can overcome most if not all of them. one could say that they can gouge your eye out, well here is a thought, so can the other guy, they can also bite.
i know of a guy that did bjj, high level purple belt, fought mma professionally, and bounced as a side gig. he tried to escort a guy out of a club, the guy got mouthy, he took him down and mounted him to subdue him, the guy on the bottom spazzed out, grabbed the bouncers head and bit his ear off. the bjj guy was shocked and smacked him in the head and ko'd him and sat on him till the police came.
im not totally discrediting ninjitsu, im sure it has some applications like all martial arts, but the art is only as good as teh practioner

Anyone take any of these martial arts and have any comments about which one is best?
Secondly, I've been thinking about taking a martial art, can anyone give me their experience with their specific style.
Thanks..

imagine if u will college or high school wrestling, like that but with a gi and with submission holds.
i train under marcelo rezende at gracie barra sydney. i recently competed at the mundials in july.
i take it that being in texas, more than likely u r a machado guy? im also guessing ur a high blue or purple
anyway, i said wrestling, as most people can visualise what it might look like, that or grown sweaty men, rolling around on the ground.
im surprised that u quit wrestling, we have a few freestyle wrestlers, and they have amzing base, as well as takedowns. plus those that come from a wrestling background have a great work ethic. i only wish i had the opportunity to take up wrestling at the high school level, it would have been a great addition to my game

I laugh when people say "real fighting is gouging eyes, crushing throats, doing anything to survive." When two "real" people fight, they don't spend much time trying to kill the other person, it is more a domination/submission type of affair. Only someone who's never actually been involved in a physical altercation would glorify it as some kind of death match.
Sure, occasionally there is the psychotic **** that will try to kill someone over a petty breach of etiquette, but by and large, two people fighting on a sidewalk is a lame boxing match at best, amateur wrestling at the most pathetic. If you truly think a punch to the nose will kill you so you need to go for the jugular from the get-go, you are the biggest pansy to ever think they are tough - certainly not a badass of any kind. Taking martial arts classes and thinking that means you can kick some guy's ass is the funniest thing ever. The reality is you are deathly afraid of the very people you delude yourself into thinking you are so much better than, and would go down like a prom queen the first time someone actually spit at you in anger.
Avoiding a fight is the only skill worth learning. And a conviction that you "can handle yourself" is not a successful avoidance strategy.

i agree with no really. when people fight on the street, more often than not, its a bunch of drunk guys swinging windmills at each other, or they try and wrestle sloppily with each other and try to get headlocks.
also, one thing to also take into consideration, is that the human body is actually pretty sturdy, it can take a lot of punishment, then again, some people have died from the most mundane falls, its weird.
but the point of taking up a martial art is that it can protect you if a situation arises, with bjj, it teaches u how to escape headlocks (the original concept of bjj was as a self defence system), it teaches u how to maneuveur on the ground, how to reverse situations where u may be dominated, it teaches u how to subdue opponents. without striking, or biting, or ripping out throats

It's funny, I see a good number of immature comments about how one system is so great or better than another. The more you know, the less you need to brag about it. The BJJ guys seem to be the most impressed with their system. Good for you guys, I'm glad it is right for you.
I also see that the fight has now degraded to male dominance and drunking swinging (kind of like this discussion). You guys seem to be the experts in the human condition and fighting techniques. After this, I'm going to leave this thread to you.
no_really It seems your understanding is limited, but your talk is big. I'll try to help you. If a trained, mature martial artist is in a fight, there are some extreme circumstances. Martial arts gives you the confidence and maturity to understand that you don't need to get in a fight to prove you are a man. It doesn't teach you that you can kick anyone's ass. Your argument and tough guy talk is based on ignorance and bravado. I guess the internet gives you the confidence to act like a man and mock something you don't understand. I hope that works out for you. Education and experience are your friend.
Sure, there are a number of people who take some matial art for a year and are ready to defeat the world. They are the exception and certainly not the foundation for this discussion. I think we can agree they are the fools and not the topic of this thread.
The final point I am going to make is this:
There is no best system (sorry BJJ guys). If you look at the founders of the different systems, or even the "grand masters," you will find their training history is very diverse. They seek out the best each style has to offer in order to improve themselves. The last thing they would be doing is posting on the internet on how their system is the best.

Basically, some people don't need martial arts classes to act like an adult.
Please tell me, if martial arts training makes people so mature and aware of the uselessness of fighting, why can't you have a discussion on martial arts without someone bringing up the question of who can kick who's ass? Kind of seems like a situation where there is a lot of lip service paid to the "no need to fight" but a whole lot of glorification of violence.
If you read my entire original post, you'd have seen the last two sentences. That's pretty much all that needs be said.
