Last night I was on my new computer and I heard a loud BANG come from inside the tower and the computer immediately shut itself off. I tried hitting the power button again, and there was no response. I disconnected everything and looked inside, and the spacers that hold the fan in place were disconnected on the top of the fan and the fan was leaning down toward the motherboard, held in place by the spacers on the bottom. I tried everything and I could not get the power back on. I've got the old computer connected for the time being.

HELP!!

Which fan are you refering to. The one cooling your processor, system fan, power suply fan, etc.? Did this fan hit anything or was it just displaced. Are these spacers you are talking about by any chance the heatsink(metal piece that is inbetween the processor and a fan)

It's the fan that is connected to the rear of the tower. The only thing it could have hit was the plastic case around the other fan on top of the CPU. The fan on top of the CPU looks perfectly fine, not a scratch on it. which is why I can't figure out WTF happened. Maybe it pulled something loose out of the power supply, but I'm not about to go poking around in there.

Aarghhh

just swap power supplies if you have another computer with the same type. What kind of chip you got in the new one? If worse comes to worse you can get a power supply for like $40. Try switching them out first. If you have a P4, you'll need a P4 power supply to swap with as the P3 and below powersupplies are different.

The computer I'm using right now is a P3, the new one is a P4. I'm taking it to Fry's tonight to have them look at it, I'm 90% sure it isn't turning on due to the power supply. I highly doubt anything happened to the motherboard, as the fan cannot possibly make contact with it.

One question remains: How the hell could this have happened?????????
