240SX! The car is simple to work on, super damn tough, parts are relatively cheap, and lately, there are a ton of aftermarket parts for them. It was my first car. Not too much horse power to get you in trouble if you punch it hard in a corner, but enough to keep you amused and learn on (though I did leave the road backwards a few times). I learned stick on it and the joy of driving a RWD car 365 days of the year. The RWD is the only thing that makes winter here bearable. The drive to school and back was a drift competition in the snow every day.

Chris.

get a 99+ miata. there's lots of performance parts for it--e.g. supercharger!! the car is hella fun to drive (almost as fun as an s2000), it's light and nimble, and it's a great for autocrossing. last but not least, it's a ROADSTER. in other words, loads of topless fun--again, next best thing to s2000!!

1.6liter miata (90-93)
Cheap, easy to work on, decent aftermarket, handles better than anything else available for the price and a convertible.
