I predict you'll be happy with your current salary for 3-4 months
3-4 months?? I'd give it 1-2 months before you realize that no vacation for the first year plus your meager salary sucks, and you start looking for a new job. I know cause that's what happened to me

Congrats!
1. Save, save, save.
2. Cherish your weekends.
3. Don't think of your salary in terms of $$$/year; think of it in $/lb. of
4. They hired you for a reason; if that reason becomes moot; leave.

Your student loans probably equal our national debt.

I'm a Mechanical Engineer. I work for a Mechanical/Electrical Engineering Consulting Firm in NYC. On the mechanical side... we design HVAC systems for buildings... mainly data centers (huge loads of heat from the servers), open floor space from all the computers and people that are stationed on the different floors and on the electrical side... we size switches, outlets, circuit tracing, calculate loads from the different working mechanisms of a building, etc. It's actually pretty interesting and everything comes together to make things nice and cool... haha. We also have huge contracts with the large financial companies such as Credit Suisse and Goldman Sachs... so I get to see a lot of hot, business chicks all nicely dressed in their skirts and suit jackets... oh yeah... lol.

Although I do have loans they are not massive, I have personally funded my entire education by working at every stage.

At a certain point, once you have a few degrees, they start paying you to be a student

Wow - no vacation the first year. That's tough. My first job out of college was great in terms of experience but poor in terms of benefits and I still got a week for my first year.

Two years later, with another company, I get three weeks a year (with "unlimited" personal/sick days) and a lot more money (though I'm not making six figures yet).

I'm a mech engineer too, just so you know. Get your experience for a year or two, then move to another company and get the salary and benefits you're worth. There's a pretty strong market for engineers these days, so it shouldn't be tough.
