I'm a mech engineer too, just so you know. Get your experience for a year or two, then move to another company and get the salary and benefits you're worth. There's a pretty strong market for engineers these days, so it shouldn't be tough.
Now here's someone that knows what he is talking about. I might say 3/4 years experience, but then again I'm on the 1's and 0's side of engineering. I'll say that there should be a nice pay raise when you make the switch :-)

There are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Sorry, you are actually right. I graduated with roughly four years of "real" work experience so after two years with my first company out of school, I was at six years of experience. That gave me a real boost when looking elsewhere.

So yes, wait 3 to 4 years. You'll get a better offer and command a better position then.

Damn, there's a lot of crusty, embittered working class on this site! Anyway, when I got out of school, I continued to work at the same place I did when I was in school, so it smoothed the transition. Don't get all beaten down. All this means now is you can pretty much do whatever you want. It's not all so bad.

I hear you on that... that was my plan. Stay here for sometime and gain some experience because the chiefs here are ridicuously smart... so I'm going to try to suck as much as I can out of them and then probably move on. They are a relatively small company... 35 in NYC and about 32 in LA... so it's more personal as far as talking one on one with the chief mechanical.

j/k

(PS, dont let your boss catch you )
There is no replacing... lol. This is how it is for me... get to work, get breakfast, open up company email and read, then I open up s2ki.com and read, then I have myspace open as well. They stay on the whole day... it's a slight escape from the work place... it's good for a laugh or two while at work.

Oh... and how could I forget... the casual, slow walk to the kitchen for some food and to walk by the HOT intern that sits on the way... haha... lol.

I plan on switching companies in a year or two, but so far things have been excellent where I am at. I've been with a major aerospace company, I have my BS in Aerospace Engineering, and we have been averaging 10-15% raises the past two years. I've only been out of school and here for two years, so I've been making out pretty well sticking here, but we'll see how long that lasts. The demand for engineers is incredible these days, seems like companies are throwing money at us to stick around!

I think us engineers have a lot going for us right now!
