Default Fish Ponds

Does anyone have an outdoor fish pond or garden? I would love to see pictures and learn more about how to maintain them. Below if the links work are my pictures.

We have a 30x40 pond... Used to be seasonal, but we had it dug deeper and lined last year.

Now stocked with Brown and Rainbow Trout. No, we don't eat them...

My father-in-law has a very similar setup to yours. Same mushroom shaped fountain. Same kinds of plants. He has about 30 goldfish in his. They've lasted about 4-5 yrs. He has a heater and a home made canopy for the winter. However, he's retired so he's out there almost every day doing something to it. The filters seem to need attending to frequently. I've also just come back from Comox where I saw a fellow with a carp (coy) pond in his back yard. A couple of them are over 3 feet long. He has a combination of foam, gravel and biological filters. His fish are trained to follow him around the pool and they come up and let him pet them on the head. One even lets him cradle it and lift it right out of the water. When he puts his hands in the water, they all come over and suck on his fingers. Have fun. If you like, I can take some pictures of my in-laws pond.

Hey, I've been thinking about building a small (about 12x6--my back yard isn't the biggest in the world) pond. Any one here build their pond from scratch? Any pointers?

If I end up doing one, I'll want to have it filtered, and I'd want to keep koi in it. But I'm kinda worried about how much work it'll be to maintain it. For you folks out there with ponds, do you spend a lot of time on maintenance? About how much time/week?

Honda Gal, your pond looks pretty nice. Are those koi I see in there? Do you know how many gallons your pond is? And how many fish do you have?

Ed, I purchased a pre-formed pond liner thing, had it dug in the grown. It is only 50 gallons, and the fish are gold fish, 7 of them.

Filtering is easy.. I bought a 250 gallon per hour pump/filter, and then I searched the net for a homemade filter idea. Works great. I took a 3 gallon pail, lined it with furnace filter, put a 190 gallon per hour pump in, packed more filter in, with some biological stones, and sunk it at the bottom. I am running approx 400 gallons per hour.

It is high maintenance, but fun
