Default Is This Fraud?

I got an e-mail from a gentleman (?) in Dubai who wrote that his son is getting married in Long Beach in September and wanted to hire me to perform at the reception. I quoted him $450.

Today I got an e-mail saying that a money order is on its way. Unfortunately (it read), the accountant misunderstood the instructions and sent me a money order for $1,600.55. He asked that I send him a cheque for the difference - $1,150.55 - after the money order arrives, and apologized for the inconvenience.

I don't recall anything on my website that suggested that I'm an idiot or a dupe. Perhaps I should reread it.

Like they say, there's a new sucker born everyday. Unfortunately, these bastards will get to one of them eventually.

That's funny.. Interesting they were trying to scam you by pretending to hire you for YOUR services. Usually it's the buying the car thing.

I'm thinking maybe I should simply tell him that I'll hand him the difference when we meet at the reception, assuming, of course, that the wedding planner contacts me to let me know the time and location of the reception.

Well, for the record, it is a fraud. You can try cashing the money order for the fun of it, but don't send any money away or you'll never see it again.

I just got one - someone wanted to send me $4,000 to ship a bicycle and just include a check for the $3,800 difference. I mean, come on....

just white out the dollar amounts on what he sends you, and fill in $4000, and ask him to send you the difference when he gets your money order.

Two money orders arrived in the post today: one for $750.23 and the other for $850.30; that totals only $1,600.53, not $1,600.55 as advertised.

I'll explain the situation to the nice folks at the Credit Union and let them have fun with it.
