i don't know if this is a repost or if anyone has heard of this yet, but i did a search of the site and i saw that some of you had actually recommended one of these sites to someone looking for a credit report.

i checked my online bank statement yesterday and noticed this:

Transaction Description: MC-CIC*CREDIT MONITORING 800-2202626
Amount: ($9.95)

i didn't know WTF it was... so i went to the bank and they told me that it was a debit transaction and so i must have authorized it somehow, but if i was in doubt i should call the number (800-2202626). i call the number and get some lady who can barely speak english. she tells me that i signed up for a credit reporting service on the internet... i tell her that i don't recall signing up for anything and i have no use for this service when i know that i am entitled to a FREE credit report by law. she tries to tell me all the great things i get with this service and is actually trying to upsell me and have me buy a more expensive monthly service. i tell her that i don't want it, to cancel my membership and credit the $9.95 back to my account, she tells me she can do that, but asks if i would first like to take a quick survey. lol... these people are relentless. so supposedly i'm going to get my money back... we'll see.

i do a little research and find out that this is happening to A LOT of people... and i'm actually lucky, cause a lot of the complaints people are getting charged $79.95, $12.95... and they've been debiting this out of these people's accounts for months without them noticing. i noticed it the 1st time it came through... the one thing everyone had in common is that they had ordered a "FREE" credit report from either freecreditreport.com or consumerinfo.com... they give you a "free" report and then con you into signing up for this membership and then they automatically withdraw money out of your account each month... here's some links:

apparently, the ONLY place to actually get a FREE report is: www.annualcreditreport.com

Yeah, I've heard that before and their commercials are f**kin' annoying me. At the end of the commercial, the announcer says "Free credit report applies WITH enrollment with Triple Advantage" or something to that effect.

Seemed like a scam to me. If it's FREE, why are you required to "enroll"? You can get one free credit report each year through the three credit bureaus, Experian, TransUnion and Equifax. When obtaining the free credit report, I would only get it directly through one of those.

Good catch on your statement and make sure you check it for the next few months to make sure those bastards aren't trying to screw you again.

there is an actual website where u get a FREE Report and they do NOT ask you for your credit card info or nothing. You are supplied 1 free credit report annually from each of the three credit agencies so your best bet is spread it out to every 4 months you get a new clean copy.

If i am not mistaken the site is www.annualcreditreport.com

I have used it a couple times now and it works good, though you do NOT get your beacon score.

Edit: Sorry didn't realize you noted it on the bottom of your post!

Yep. The credit report is free, but you have to pay for score. Maybe you did by mistake?

I did something similar (but I knew they'd charge me in 30 days if I didn't cancel) but I called and immediately cancelled my subscription as soon as I'd seen my credit report.

The guy on the phone was like, "Mr. XXX, I notice you just signed up for this...eight minutes ago. You still have 30 days left to try this out. Are you SURE you want to cancel right now?"

Heh heh heh.

I just got my first free credit report. I was not asked, nor would I have given, my credit card number. If you are asked that, LOOK OUT.
