Default Which garage floor coating? Edit. Just ordered floor tiling.

I will be moving into new house first week in August. It has a big 3 car garage and I am planning to coat the garage floor before I move all the stuff in.

I've read mixed reviews on the epoxy coatings found at Home Depot or lowes etc.

I thought of the tiles but that will be 3-4k easy so not in the budget for garage floor right now. It's a 32x20 foot space approximately.

I'd love for it to be a single coat application but if infinitely better to do a 2 coat process I would. I'll have 1 weekend to apply it only before stuff will have to be moved in.

Should it cure in 2 days to have stuff brought into it? I have movers bringing stuff in on August 3rd and losing is July 30th so not a lot of time before stuff is going in.

If you want to do it right it is expensive but you want something that is 100% epoxy solids not some Home Depot water based kit.

First, in order to see if Epoxy is the right coating you need to see if the slab sheds moisture from below. Put down a piece of plastic sheeting on a section for a few days and when you peel it up, is it dry or is the spot underneath it damp looking compared to the rest of the floor? If it looks damp, an epoxy coat my not work. If it looks real damp you might be better of with Race Deck.

But I would try this stuff or any 100% epoxy solid from an industrial floor coating manufacturer.

But a 750 sqft garage floor can run $1200 for materials if you do it top notch. And your prep is key. Sweep, wash, then acid etch a twice.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I won't be able to test that before I move down there so I may have to just hope it will be ok. I plan to etch the surface, pressure wash and then let dry and do a 100% solids epoxy flooring with a heavy duty clear coat.

I found this company and it seems to be really good stuff from reviews I've read.

Looks like it is about 19 mil thick. The crappy home depot ones are like 3-4 mil thick I believe and do not have any clear coat either.

All the info on what I used is here.

If you do the paint chips you need to do the clear coat. If you don't it is easy to catch the paint chip and pull the coating up. Buy a decent respirator. The clear especially is a brutal smell.

Looks like yours came out really nicely!!

Yeah the stuff I posted above comes with military grade clear coat it said that should really help protect it.

Total thickness is 19 mil for this stuff which should be super durable. 100% solids.

Stuff is not cheap though! It will cost about $1200 to do the 660 square foot garage!

Yup. I spent about that if you add up the prep and everything. Not cheap but I rather do it once then have to redo it. Oh if you don't have a leaf blower get one. Super helpful for cleaning the garage. The prep is really the back breaker here. Scrubbing the floor clean is a pain. Actually coating it really isn't to bad since you just pour the stuff onto the floor and push it around till the floor is covered.

Yeah I do have a leaf blower so that should help.

The $1200 is close to price of just going with garage floor tiles it seems. Epoxy floor definitely worth it over those? About $1500 for good quality garage floor tiles to cover entire garage.

ive had good success with the Rustoleum Professional Floor Coating Kit. The one that Home Depot and Lowes carry is the Rustoleum Garage Floor Kit, which is water based. There are some pretty good threads on the Garage Journal forums of the "How To" if you have never done it.

Sherwin William's Shark Tooth works better than the grit provided in the Rustoleum kits.

I helped my brother with his for his garage. Used lowes garage floor coating. valspar brand.

Key thing is prep like everybody else says. we used acid etching and u got to scrub the floor well. Fill in any
cracks or holes before the coating goes on.

It was a good investment and relatively easy to do.
