Default Garden Slug/critter - not sure

I found this odd critter in my back yard last week. I have never seen one before and really have no idea what to call it, other than the 1 eyed scarey thing.

I do have slugs in the yard but nothing like this if this is a slug. It had a sucking type mouth underneath it's head, and slithered slowly.

Is there anyone that can identify this? I got rid of him promptly but if there is one there must be another one somewhere. haha

Entomology was one class that I neglected to take--probably should have. I am not completely sure but from the markings it looks very similar to a tomato/tobacco hornworm without the horn. Here's an image I found on wiki:

It is definitely some type of caterpillar--most likely a moth producing one. What plant did you find it on?

Thanks Rick.

I see where the similarities are but this guy was tan in colour. I found on the cement patio, my initial thought was it was a pine cone or my dog's turd. When I got the shovel it wiggled.

HondaGal,

it doesn't really matter what type of critter it is.. just make sure your garden is being taken care of. what type of deterant are you using for these little bugs/critters?

Looked like a tomato worm to me too, but as you say the color is wrong....

Off with his head, to be safe.

haha..
he is long gone.

Enthralled, if I knew what the heck it was I would know what to use to deter it. It is in to fall now. I suspect it came in the bedding plants that I bought. I did start my own tomatoes from seed, like I have done for about 4 years now.

So maybe I grew this little devil
