Default Gearing and Torque

I came across a thread late last night that was on a forum and saw this one poster going on about torque, and how important it is. But I felt like he was speaking for all the wrong reasons.

What do you guys think?

Cheers fellas

i'm with mikeyCB, oh how i take s2ki for granted.

torque gets you off the line, horsepower carries you down the track. so both are important.

You might mention that torque is not measured in pounds (which is a unit of force); torque is measured in pound-feet (or foot-pounds), or Newton-meters. Thus, torque has the same units as energy (measured in joules; 1 joule = 1 Newton-meter), though physically they're quite different.

Horsepower is a unit (although an imprecise one), that measures power: the rate at which energy is converted from one form to another. A better unit of measure of power is the watt, which is precise: 1 watt = 1 joule per second.

Broadly, acceleration is produced by torque, not power. Top speed is produced by power.

As for educating the contributers to the forum you cited: I suspect that you're wasting your time in any attempt.

Listen to some of what this guy says...

"Gees im glad you realised torque is the twisting force or as you anally put it as the rotational force... and what does that rotational force do care to answer that???? and what happens when you have have more torque??? it has a far greater ability to move an inert object .. so a vehicle with more torque like a truck/tractor etc has far greater ability to pull\push\move things due to its greater torque force. so as far as any one is concerned that torque is the force that push, pulls.. moves the inert object and i dont give a shit what fancy physics you wanna spout. im putting it in lamens term.

-I have explained in pure physical sense how torque and power are relational in a motor vehicle and how it behaves and where torque is utilized by a vehicle and where power is utilized.. thats why you hear the expression TOP END POWER you dont hear Top End Torque.

This is his definition: "torque is the pulling power and gets you moving and is the shoving force that pulls your car and helps you accelerate .. power comes into play and keeps things moving well after torque has lost its affect and gravity has been over come and when pulling torque is no longer in required and where inertia and power will continue to help you maintain speed"

It's really not that serious man. I don't have all the answers and wanted to maybe get some help from some of the educated members who had a few minutes of free time. I just have a friend on that site who has one of those GTI's so I started popping in there once in a while to see what the site was about. See how their VS section was. And backing him on a couple of his 1/4 mile runs.

Obviously, some of their members are rather new to this whole gearing and torque multiplication stuff. And some of the guys are blinded by their "massive peak dyno numbers". Some of those modded GTI's get 300+ft/lbs, but it peaks usually in the mid range and anything after is bleeding power/boost pretty fast.

Some of the guys truly want to learn, and ask me to break certain tings down for them to my ability in PM's and such. They're not a bunch of bad guys, some are just very young. But we all were once upon a time.

If anyone wants to respond on my behalf to that guy Robby's post, I would appreciate it. I'm not the greatest at putting this stuff into words, and I'm nearing my accuracy limit.
