you can leave the payout to anyone you want, the same way as you would any other asset. Obviously taking the lump sum, even with the huge initial hit (you only get ~60%), will allow you to make more money in 30 years than if you were to take the annuity.. but you'd have to get a moderate ROI. somewhere between 7-8%. For example, a 5% return would put you behind (i.e. 5% return on the annuity, invested every year for 30 years vs 5% on the lump sum invested and let to sit for 30 yrs).

This may have been the best way to protect his kids and grandkids from themselves.

My dad is an 85 year old WWII vet with plenty of shrapnel scars to show for it. he wouldn't want to win the lottery but I wouldn't mind if he did.

You know what, good for the old guy that won it. If it weren't for people like him we wouldn't even have the freedom to have a lottery!

Say did anybody else notice that tool that won the, something like, $300 powerball during Christmas about 5 years ago filed for bankruptcy?

The guy made his big announcement that he was giving 10% off the top to his church, then he was taking suitcases full of $500,000 in cash to the local strip club.

The strip club owner and a stripper were caught drugging him and stealing his cash.

He had a relative (I think it was niece or grandkid) die I think from a suicide at his home. And now he is broke.

He was a millionaire beforehand as an owner of a small construction company and then he wins the big dough and his life goes to poop.

Go figure.

The real sad thing is that he was a millionaire before he won the lottery. He was probably a billion times happier with the money he earned vs. the money he won, and now he's just plain miserable.
