Default Gift ideas

So I have been dating this girl for a few months and now its time for the Christmas gift. I have not dated around Christmas in a long while, so my sense of good gift vs bad gift is a bit off. We've joked about spending very little (<$30) on each other, but I am not sure if this is a trap, so I am planning on spending slightly more to cover my ass. Here are the best ideas I have come up with so far:

1. Shirt and scarf from NY&Co. her favorite store - Are clothes off limits?
2. Brita filter - She asked for it, but is this a legit gift?
3. Gift card - Is this as impersonal as cash?

What's the best of the above? Is there a better 4th choice this season? She's into many of the latest trends, but I am old and out of touch so I have no clue what they are.

Thanks in advance OT for your ideas and ridicule

We haven't been dating that long, but I'll save your idea for Valentine's Day

Go with scarf and hat not scarf and shirt. Stay away from gift cards, very impersonal.

#2 while thoughtful, is no good. If anything, get this in addition to something like #1

#3 is out of the question

Honestly I think something like a nice dinner and some sex would be right in line.

#2 and #3 = hell no

#1 might work

surprise her with something romantic, flowers, dinner, stuff like that. i dunno. use your imagination. in my experience, the money isn't an issue with chicks nearly as much as how much time/effort/thought you put into something. hence why a gift card is awful.

If she asked for it, you should get it. Either that, or just get it for her today or tomorrow.

Clothes work just no underwear. Did that once, and the look on her parent's faces... yikes haha.

If she likes things like spas and manicures, get her a gift certificate for like an afternoon at a spa.

If you have lots of pictures, make something like a scrapbook.

Stuff like this definitely scores points. As Tuna said, thought beats price (almost) every time.

only exception is going above and beyond... expensive jewelry frequently wins. depends on the girl tho.

...plus, with that method you spend a bunch of money for the same wow factor as .. say... lighting your whole place up with candles and nailing her on a throw rug.

I've never been good with the whole romantic evening thing. I always feel like I'm obligating the girl to give me sex. Besides, I pay whenever we go out and we usually go to decent places, so the dinner idea might play like I am pawning a usual Friday evening off as a gift.

Use my imagination, hmmmm....
