Going to London and Paris next week, any recommendations?
Just spent two weeks in France and had a great time. We toured the country and spent only three days in Paris. My suggestions are (in no order)....
If you have a car - head over to Givernay and see Monet's Gardens. If you like impressionism at all, it is truely a remarkable place. Also, spend time in the town as all the homes have great gardens. You can also stop at Versailles while you are out there. It was built on such a grand scale that it almost hurts the head.
The thing I think I talked about most from Paris were the Catacombs. Had to be one the freakiest things I've ever seen (and I've seen my fair share).
Notre Dame was spectacular.
Be ready for Loooooonnngggg meals. Plan at least 3 hours for dinner. A good tourist spot was the Bofinger as well as Au Pied du Cochon. Remember that apertifs are part of the meal as well as Digestivs.
The GF and I don't speak much French and we managed OK. Many restaurants have English on them and some even had English menus if you asked for them. Almost everyone speaks English. I always lead off conversations with "I'm sorry, I don't speak French" in french. I think this helped.
The Paris subway (metro) is very good and trains come often. The city is too big to try to walk.
Be ready to gain weight in France with all the bread, cheese, wine, bread, cheese, etc....
