That link will also give you places to see, tours, museums, and so on. Not sure what you're into as you haven't given us much information. Just plan out where you want to go and what you'd like to see, figure out your routes if you don't plan on taking a taxi, and other than that, you should be fine. Definitely grab a slice while you're there!!
food is awesome here. use yelp.com to find good places to suit you.
and brings shoes you can definitely walk in.
avoid the people trying to promote their "cd's". when my tourist/best friend came to visit, he fell for that one. The the guy on the street stopped him, was like "yea, i'm promoting MTV which is in that building right over there (points to random building). This is my new CD, here what's your name, let me sign it for you (signs CD in sharpie with my friends name), alright it's free but I definitely would appreciate a donation. most people pay $20 for a cd like this"....etc etc.
it was so quick my friend didn't know what hit him. I think he just gave him a $10 and the guy was complaining after. lol.

Don't overtip the cab fare
Bring extra cash, NY is expensive (food-wise) - I usually go once a year. Stay around time square (everything is walking distance) and check out SoHo and Little Italy. Look into buying a multi-day metro pass.

I'm probably not the best person to ask, but i've been there quite a bit so I guess I'm pass the tourist stage. PM if you want some suggestions.

Thanks for the tips. Yah i know about the whole "street vendors" thing. I'm usually the asshole that completely ignores people like that or i just tell them to leave me alone. Should i avoid subways if traveling after dark, or is that just kind of a myth/problem of the past? I was looking into the city pass for things like MoMA, Empire state, things of that nature. Thanks for the tips

subway thing is a myth (unless you're headed to the sketchy parts of queens/brooklyn/bronx) I've ridden on the subway at all hours and never had a problem.. well besides a bum pissing his pants sitting next to me. Actually the subway is one of the best way to get around the city.
If you want to waste an hour or so I say go down to the Staten Island Ferry. It's a free ferry ride that gives you some great views!
You can always make your way over to brooklyn for some cheaper eats/drinks/and unique bars. The Williamsberg/Greenpoint sections (besides being hipster city) can be a lot of fun for far cheaper than Manhatten.
