Going to Thailand.
Hey so Im going to Thailand for 1 month to do Muay Thai training. What are some things I should do and what I shouldn't do. This is my first time leaving the states so I'm kind of nervous, I know rule number one is not to talk to ladyboys lol.
Nice! I went to Thailand 2 years back for a week and a half. Love it there!
Try not being the college, boisterous, drunken, outspoken fool that i saw most American tourists doing. Then again that happens in the touristy areas and big cities.
There is a level of respect and peace you should understand too. If you meet a respectable girl, she will obviously be accompanied by a friend or a family member whenever going out. Public displays of affection are frowned upon. Thai women are also looked at pretty badly if they are alone with a "farang" (you)..
that's relationship type stuff..
hospitality is abundant, for independent people this will be a little awkward.. you will offend someone if are not grateful
getting used to being called and looked at like you are a foreigner is going to be weird.
Do not take everything for granted.
food is awesome as hell!
Buddhism is prominent along with morals and cultural values, learn to wai when greeting people, saying good bye, and be as polite as possible.
keeping your head down while you wai is a great for of respect (similar to Japanese bowing, the further you bow the greater the respect)
too much though, and you will either be questioned or laughed at.
Respecting elders is obvious.
never desecrate or violate the kings insignia, or for that matter speak negatively about him.
Do not argue or show anger to people unless you intend on being shunned
cursing is pretty bad as well
try keeping a cheerful mood
this will sound odd but almost everyone drinks from straws
learn to use chop sticks and handle the heat of the food and the weather
if someone is too polite and more then willing to help you, they are about to scam the fk out of you
Thai people are really shy by nature (good one's that is)
you will be surprised by how many can speak English.
is the manner of purchasing things.. if English is great, they have a good idea of what the currency is worth and how much they can get from you.
paying to use the restroom is BS, but some areas you have to (like is someone's home where their business is)
Thai people are very close with their family
in crowded areas watch your damn pockets and the people who run into you
i might come up with some more things, just a little rusty by memory now...
