Thumbs up Going on a trip and need a recommendation...

Hey guys,

I haven't been much of a traveler, but I need a recommendation on which place is a awesome location to go?

I guess my friends and i are looking for
1. Decent price
2. Activities to do (snorkeling, ATV, etc.)
3. Party night life?

Also, other than Expedia.com and Orbitz.com, is there a place online where they offer good discounts???

Any recommendations/help would be appreciated!

Cancun. All-Inclusive.

I've also been to Cabo, and it was cool, but the water wasn't really conducive to swimming/snorkeling/etc. Too cold this time of year, and the rip current on the beach was ridiculous.

Cozumel is good & cheap, but the nightlife isn't as great as Cancun, if you're looking to party. Cozumel is more mellow and laid-back. Great beaches and snorkeling here. I prefer Cozumel over Cancun, personally... but maybe I'm just getting old.

I'm leaving for Grand Cayman next week. Never been there, but I have high hopes. It's definitely not cheap, though (esp. compared to Mexico). It's supposed to have some great snorkeling, which is one of my favorite things to do. I'm just hoping that Hurricane Bertha steers clear.

Cancun has nightlife. Free snorkeling if you take a bus down to Club Med and snorkel off their beach but cost $ to go anywhere else. Good snorkeling off Isla Mujueres (sp?)

Lots of day tours from Cancun to ruins are nice.

I am headed to Cabo in three weeks, ask me again then.

Prices will be similar either place, but flights from Cali to Cabo would be slightly cheaper I would guess. We just got air and hotel from MN to Cabo at a supposed 5 star for 7 nights for about a grand each. Pretty good IMHO considering the hotel quality.

I am fine with cheaper hotels. A three star is fine with me because I am never there anyway. The wife is a different story. She wants 24 hour butt kissing and spas. You should be able to do a week air and hotel to either at a reasonable place, maybe even meals included for about $700 if a three star is ok.

Right now is the beginning for hurricane season in Cancun though. It is a crap shoot and not likely to get hit but it can happen.

get trip insurance if you're going between July and November.

I'm heading to St. Lucia in Mid September for my honeymoon. We're a little weary about the hurricane season, but we're hoping for the best.

We went to Cancun last year. It is a fun place. Lots to do if you're looking to party. We stayed at one of the all inclusive hotels. They had a group of people in charge of the entertainment there. During the day, they would do all these activities near the pool. At night, they would get everyone together to go out to the clubs.

Fun times.

The one in Cancun? We stayed at the Oasis Palm Beach. We were supposed to stay at the Oasis Viva Beach, but they were doing construction and didn't tell us. Instead they just moved us to one of their other hotels. Kinda sucked, but worked out okay.

Here's the website for them. I don't know what package we did though, she did all the work. I'm pretty sure she went through some sort of travel agent.

There are many others down there too. These were just ones that she had found and heard good things about.

BTW - we were there mid October. It was a little cloudy most of the day. Rained a couple days. But overall was pretty good weather. Of course, we were coming from Seattle, so we're pretty used to the rain anyway.

Oh, another thing about Cabo... it's totally infested with Timeshare Salespeople. You can either ignore them constantly or take advantage of their offers.

We signed up with one of the timeshare dudes at the airport and got a free limo ride from the airport to our hotel, a free parasailing excursion, a free booze cruise, and a free horseback riding thing (that we didn't use). We also got a free breakfast w/ unlimitied mimosas & drinks... but then we had to sit through their pitch, and then were handed off to a salesman. We weren't really sure what to do at that point, so we played the game with the sales guy a bit. Once he realize that we weren't serious, he got all pissy and just told us to leave. We would've been better off just telling him up front, I think, rather than wasting 15 minutes of our (and his) time.

We actually met a couple while we were there that only hit up the "cash only" timeshare people, i.e. the ones that offer cash instead of excursions. They get cheap flights to Cabo, camp somewhere (on the beach?), and go to enough "cash prize" timeshare seminars to cover the cost of their plane ticket and expenses. Voila! Free vacation. Personally, I wouldn't have the dedication to do that, but the way we did it wasn't bad, and it saved us $75 for the fare from the airport, plus we got about 300-400 dollars worth of free excursions (since there were 5 of us). All it cost us was about 2-3 hours of our time, and we got it out of the way the first morning that we were there, so we had the rest of the time to use the free excursions.
