thanks again for all the help guys! We may swing past a shop this weekend.

I am damned no matter what.... if we go cheap he will love playing... if we go expensive it will collect dust in a corner......

I guess if we go expensive I can buy it from him and annoy my neighbors with it.
I think you can get in and out for under 300. That is perfect for a beginner's setup that will have some longevity. Just remember guitars can get extremely expensive. That gibson electric of mine lists for around 2000 new but you can pick them up retail for 1200. My main guitar is a '00 Taylor 810ce. I won't even scare you with the price on that puppy. My point being 300 bucks is a drop in the bucket when it comes to guitars and will be a setup he can really enjoy.

On the flip side with decent starting equipment like the stuff I linked to, if it does collect dust, you can actually sell it to someone else who is just starting out. Probably not the case with the crappy stuff.

If my son were starting guitar (FYI I have no kids, or wife for that matter) I would point him toward that Telecaster and Crate amp. That's a pretty sexy setup In fact I want a telecaster They have great sound...
