I'm sure all of you sophisticated internet users know about the Google search engine. It is by far the best I've ever used. It seems to almost be intuitive in its capabilities. What do you think?

 

Google is the yardstick. It pisses me off everytime I use a search engine and it doesn't deliver in the same manner as Google.

 

Works for me, every time.

What exactly is the difference? I do a search on google that returns pretty much the exact same results as yahoo or even altavista. What features make google heads and shoulders above other search engines?

 

Actually, if you know how to utilize boolean operators to there fullest potential, several search engines are good as well. Google is good for non-boolean operators. Alta-Vista has an awesome advanced search engine which allows you to use as many operators and as long a thread command as you would like.

if you've not noticed, yahoo utilizes the google engine now.

groups.google is also great, i love how they revamped dejanews. very easy to read and post usenet from the web. the google toolbar is nice to have too.

When I'm looking for something more obscure I'll use altavista, but I think yahoo is worthless as a search engine.

 

A major part of my job up until a couple years ago was to conduct searches on the open web. Through my experience and others within my field, yahoo has never been worth crap. I have about 15 search engines still stored in my favorites and yahoo isn't one of them.

 

yeah, the toolbar is great! i'd really like to place it in my task bar though.
