Fyi, Google desktop is pretty much spyware in the sense that it does track what you do and report back to Google. If you're interested in privacy, Apple has it built into its OS already (Spotlight), so does SUSE Linux's Beagle, and it does not report back to anybody. Microsoft says it will have this feature when Vista is released in 2006-7.
When you install google desktop or google toolbar, the setup asks: Do you want to turn advanced features on or off? If you choose off, google receives no information from your computer.
From their privacy policy: Your computer's content is not made accessible through Google Desktop to Google without your explicit permission.
Spyware usually doesn't ask your permission for your information, and they sure as heck dont let you turn it off.

Implementation is aweful though, maybe they'll do something about it in Vista.

$300 a share, now that is overpriced I guess they have too much money to burn. I must say they seem to treat the employees quiet nice so I better not knock them. lol
I wouldn't call that being treated "nice," I'd call that just not being treated at all (which works for a lot of people).
In regards to the chat client - it's really about having a chat client that will, down the line, integrate (through some nasty proprietary what-have-you) into a larger whole. The larger whole presently is the Google ad-space, but could lead to who knows what. The fact is, the vehicle is cheaper and easier built now versus a theoretical road that will come later.

You turn this on and off as you like.

Microsoft Indexing Service has been available since W2K (maybe NT, I'm not sure though, since I never looked for it back when I was using NT).
