Default Gun enthusiasts.... guff from friends/coworkers?

So I never know how to burn my lunch. I recently started going to the shooting range a block from my work. I mentioned this to a co-worker, and another overheard and start talking about how inappropriate it was during "work hours".

It seems like even if you have all the proper permits, registration, ect. and only go to the range, so many people still look at you like some sort of hick. I live on a major street with easy access to my apartment's patio. It'd be foolish in my mind not to have self protection.

Has anyone else felt like even mentioning recreational and responsible handgun ownership as a taboo these days?

I don't see any problem with discussing firearms in the workplace. I can see some people not feeling comfortable. But I think this is a great opportunity to discuss the benefits of gun ownership. I'm pretty fortunate that my department is pretty pro-gun. We used to have a few anti-gunnners but now they are pro-gun. In fact, many of us go to Front Sight regularly and more and more coworkers go with us each time.

I just got back from shooting doves in Yuma, try talking about that with the tree huggers on the coast.

Most of my t-shirts have some smart a$$ gun comment to annoy the masses.

Who care what they think. Enjoy your plinking.

I have so many guns at the house most parents won't let their f_ck trophies come over and play with my sons. Which is fine by me.

wait a second...... was the co-worker making the comment that going to the gun range during work hours or talking about firearms during work hours was unappropriate?

I could possibly get my head around the idea that talking about guns at work may unsettle a very select few and so, should not be openly discussed in mixed company......maybe.............

but as long as you dont go against company policy, you can do whatever you want on your lunch break.

Its your lunch break, you can do whatever you want on it. Next time go bang the SO and talk about it at work later. I'd love to hear that co-workers reaction.

Just make sure you aren't going against company policy. Some people have an irrational fear of guns and might try and do something about it. I know the company I work for doesn't even allow them if they are locked up and in your car so make sure your company doesn't have the same rules. They might just be scared because if you are going at lunch that means you have quick access to a gun...

Otherwise I would just put a NRA or other pro-gun sticker up on my cubical and call it a day

Where do you keep the gun when it's not in your house?

I used to go skeet shooting with our plant manager after work. But yeah, some co-workers are irrational. One thing to check -- our policy is no firearms on company property. That includes the trunk of your car in their parking lot. No issue if I park 50' further away on the street but a violation of policy otherwise.

You own a gun. Why are you asking us how to handle this problem? You know what has to be done.

BTW.. I'm in Texas, so it wouldn't be weird at all for someone to talk about going shooting during lunch. In fact, I grew up in a small town where nobody had to ask why some kids were late to class on the first day of dove hunting season.
