I'm hopping in this one really late, but as a whole, America isn't exactly a great country (IMO). However, it is the best of the available choices offered (again, IMO). What I find somewhat amusing and sad is that a country that is lacking so much in so many different areas is still considered "great" (in general). I am not the first, nor will I be the last, to say that humans could have been so amazing, but instead we have settled for the type of existence that we currently live in. The problem lies in the fact (well not fact, just MO) that the average joe isn't intelligent. However, there really is no realistic remedy to that. Alright, I'll stop ranting.

Just on a random note...I don't get why Jesus is always portrayed as a caucasian when he was most likely darker skinned (if not, he sure as hell wasn't purely caucasian).

 

Even my law professor, who used to be a DA with LA County (he worked with Johnny Cochrane, which surprised me, I didn't know Cochrane was a DA before he defended MURDERERS like OJ - that's a personal opinion, BTW) said to the class "you don't want to be in my world, you don't want to see what I see, and I'm sure you don't want to know what I know. Because once you do, what you see and hear will disgust you, it will give you doubts about our government, and it will absolutely give you doubts about our justice system."

I know it's not directly on topic, but following on from 2kturkey's points, and the subsequent responses, I think our American brethren overestimate their worldwide popularity and are misguided in thinking that we see the sun shining out of the USA's ass.

What we see is gun toting evangelical isolationist ecobandits that sue when they trip over their own shoelaces, have no decent health service (not that the UK does either), and that think THE Paris is in Texas and England is short for New England

No offence guys, but America is the last place most Europeans (+Antipodeans?) would want to live. I fancy French Polynesia - unless the global warming caused by America sinks it under the waves. If that fails, I'll follow Le Car to La Suisse (Switzerland for those that only speak American English).

And what's with Star Wars 2 ? Let's build loads of cool monitoring stations and anti-missile missiles to stop SCUDs. Meanwhile, terrorists sneak in the back door and set off a whopping great big bomb. D'oh

And what about Bush. How can an intelligent nation elect such a total retarded moron to be president (I've got nothing against Republicans, just morons with power).

I think it's the Mediterranean influence that gives us our hot blooded temperament. At least we get it out of our system without shooting someone (I think Yugoslavs might be an exception).

I'm not generally anti-American - I spent 3 enjoyable weeks working in Philadelphia in '99 (a new murder reported on TV every day - nice), but my other half worked for an American car rental company here in the UK and they sucked - paid worse than a McDonalds 'chef', 5 days holiday, no thanks for working 70 hour weeks (to our US friends, the norm is 40 hour weeks in Europe), plus back-stabbing galore. Took me 2 years to get her to quit.

Worst of all though is ignorance and arrogance as shown by a select number of Americans - and illustrated in one of those threads. The first of those traits just makes you look stupid (eg. George W), the second will cost you your world power status just like it did Britain, France, Rome, Greece ...
