HDTV
So do you have HDTV yet? If so, what do you think about it? Do you think this is an improvement over "regular" TV or does quality even matter to you?
Is it worth the $3,000-$5,000/ per set for the increased resolution, improved color and 16:9 aspect ratio? Would you ever go back to standard defination (SD) television? How much are you paying for HD cable? Is it worth the extra cost?
Anything I missed?
Thanks,
Warren

HD is great.
It pains me to watch sports on regular tv now.
I haven't had a chance to compare HD quality over the air vs cable vs satellite, but with Time Warner cable it looks real good.
We use a small Viewsonic projector and blast a picture onto a white wall in our living room.
The image diagonal is probably 10' or so. And HD looks fantastic.

yes, worth it. But I don't think it's necessarily $3k to $5k more than a SD (standard def.) set. The Samsung 50" DLP set is about $2k at Sam's Club. Plasmas have also fallen considerably. Don't forget that most sets still need an external HD tuner. They're starting to get more common, but don't assume the set your looking at has one.
I've had a Samsung DLP for two years now, and just bought a 27" Panasonic HDTV for my wife.
We have Comcast HD cable, and the HD channels look great. Regular cable looks like crap, channels 100 and up look pretty good.
I don't watch more than an hour of TV a week anyway, so I don't much care what it looks like. I use a DVD player with DVI out to watch movies on the Samsung, and it looks great.

Ive got a 42 inch plasma and 55 inch rear projection, plasma has better bright colors.
Hate watching sports or movies on regular. If you like football or watch lots of DVD's (with progressive scan player) there is no substitute.
It will cost you though. I have had Direct TV and currently have Comcast HD and can say that hands down satellite is far far far far far far far superior and usually cheaper. The downside is you need to spend about $250-$300 on a DirecTV reciever on top of the cost of the TV. Cable usually provides it. HDTV/DVR recievers are $1000.
Never had Dish network, some friends do and love it but in my market you need two dishes on the house to get HD and DirecTV just uses one oval shaped one. Don't know anything about VOOM but it did not look that great to me when I looked into it.

50" sammy dlp for the living room, 32" WEGA in the bedroom, 15" LCD in the kitchen.
I absolutely love HD. Unfortunately, we're forced to subscribe to Cablevision and their HD line-up is quite small when compared to Time Warner Cable. TWC also offers an HD DVR for a few bucks more!
Whenever we go over to a friends home without HD, it reminds us how lucky we are
Oh yeah, I'm paying $120/mo for HD + premium #'s + cable modem + 3 set top boxes.

Just bought a 42 inch Panasonic ED plasma for less than 2k about a month ago. It's ED, not HD plasma (an HD plasma of the same size is about 700 more), but the ED picks up HDTV no problem. It has a built-in HDTV tuner so I can pick up OTA (over the air) HD signals. Since I am less than ten miles from midtown manhattan the plasma will pick up HD channels even with an indoor antenna. I had planned to install a rooftop antenna but as it turns out my Comcast cable already delivers HD channels with my basic package. I don't have digital cable or other HD premium package. I don't have ESPN HD and other premium HD channels but I get all the network HD channels. But to answer your question, HD looks FANTASTIC. Not everything is in HD but most network evening programs are in HD. I find myself watching (almost exclusively) HD programs I never use to watch before, i.e. , CSI shows look GREAT in HD. Never watched CSI before, but on the plasma it's awesome. But SD channels look very ordinary on the plasma since SD programs are in 4:3, not 16:9 so you have to deal with either the bars on two sides or one of the stretch modes. The stretch mode for 4:3 is annoying because it distorts the image so faces look odd. If I had to watch SD all the time I probably would go back to my 27 inch TV in the bedroom. I use the plasma for HD programming and DVD viewing only.

That's a great price I wished I bought it at that price. I shouldn't complain I got a darn good deal at electronics expo in Paramus.
