HDTV
I have the 65" Diamond series Mitsu rear-projection (little brother to that 73" mentioned above). The thing is an old-school monster for size but the picture is awesome. Once you watch HD sports you won't go back willingly. Is it worth it? Well if you wear glasses, is it worth wearing them? That's how much difference there is in clarity and color. And I'm only getting over-the-air broadcasts (like Monday Night Football). Haven't spent the $$ for a Sat. HD re-install (new antenna, more LNB's, new box).
My parents just went HD and it is really nice--I wish I had the cash to get one myself, but I have to wait til I'm out of grad school. Honestly sports are really nice over HD, and everything else is pretty good too. I'm actually disappointed though with DVD quality as it varies greatly disc to disc. I really can't wait til HD-DVD players are released because then DVD's will be the same quality as HDTV. I'd almost rather watch DVD's on my own Standard Definition tv than watch it on my parent's high-end setup.
Rickjames, I wonder what type of TV your parents has. DVDs usually look great in just about any type of TVs. The only drawback I have had with my plasma is when viewing SD (Standard definition, regular analog) channels. SD channels, mostly basic cable channels, range from mediocre to bad on the plasma.

I have the fifty-somthing inch version of this TV, sure it's a monster but when shows are broadcast in native 1080 I sometimes think it has better resolution than real life.
I have had HD for over a year. I bought a Sanyo PLV-Z1 LCD projector for 1500 bucks with at 8' screen and hooked it up to HD cable. With Cablevision there is no extra charge for HD. I bought the pj before I had cable for movies and playstation, so HD was a bonus.
There are many HD front Projectors on the market for less than $1000, so there is no need to spend 3K on a tv.
