When will schools start handing out "best asian student" or "best mexican student", etc?

Why discriminate against the other minorities in the school, and why should only one group get a special award? As far as my history classes have taught, NO ethnic group in america has had it good so why should one group get special attention over others?

Equality means everyones equal, that school shouldn't have even presented that award in the first place.

Hell, give the South African kid the award, if he earned it he earned it.

I certainly didn't overlook that fact. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s message was that people should be treated equally regardless of race. I would advocate that an award to a student who has done something to further that ideal is appropriate on MLK day, but an award which, by its very nature, recognizes one race above all others isn't merely inappropriate, it is insulting to his legacy.

Clearly, in context, Elistan meant an Australian aborigine attending that particular high school in Omaha; to say that this would be difficult if he lived in Australia would understate the case.

Technically we are all from Africa.

Political Correctness is a cancer on society. People need to get over their delicate sensibilities.

this is a really interesting topic...

according to the US Census Bureau, the definition of African American is "A person having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa. It includes people who indicate their race as "Black, African Am., or Negro," or provide written entries such as African American, Afro American, Kenyan, Nigerian, or Haitian."

so in that context, he wouldn't be eligible for the award.

So if we use the term as your professor does, a requirement for eligibility to win the award would be proof that one has ancestors who were slaves - presumably slaves in America.

I doubt whether the school required such proof. Thus, while your professor's definition may be accurate technically, it is not likely to be accurate practically.
