Something I'm ignorant on : How does the term "race" (as in people) relate to the term "breed" (as in dogs, cats, etc.)?

So it appears that the question to ask is: Does "African-American" refer to a race or to an ethnicity?

I quote from Martin Luther King's famous speech, I Have a Dream:

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

It seems to me that an award, given around the day that honors this great man, that requires a certain skin color for eligibility, tramples on his memory.

That's a good question. I'd say that a breed of dog more of a race of dogs due to the fact that different breeds have distinct physical characteristics. A German shepherd is vastly different than a chihuahua. They are all the same species, so that's not a consideration. A wolf, on the other hand, is a different species: canis lupis.
