My understanding of Nicholson's comment is that he told Ledger (before he tackled the project) that the role of the Joker would drive him insane. Both actors reported that the experience was extremely difficult and all-consuming. Ledger said that, while shooting, he could only get a couple hours of sleep / night, his mind would just race - even thought his body was completely exhausted.

Still a weird comment though...
