...well, I was at a fast food place tonight, grabbing a quick snack, when an Asian guy, probably about 30 came up to me. I was in the 4Runner and he taps on the window, he looked harmless and I rolled the window down to hear his request. So I hear in a broken English with a pretty thick Asian accent, "Hello, can you give me a job." I was taken aback, so much so that I was almost speechless. It wasn't a sexual thing, it seemed to be out of desperation and a sincere need to get some help. He wasn't disheveled or anything like that...just needed a helping hand in an apparent hard time for him and his friend.

I replied that (given the thread Slacker 101) that I was simply unable to help him and he seemed a little puzzled by my response. He could tell I was thinking and that I wanted to help, but it seemed that he realized how profound the question that he asked of me. I am simply unable to provide him a job. I don't employ people!

So, that got me to thinking in the flash of seconds that took place as I was putting together my reply. I imagined this guy, scraping by on very little, came to America with nothing but a dream to succeed and was going to do anything and everything to make that dream a reality - and if that included asking strangers in fast food lines for work, dammit, that's what it is going to take!! I admired him for that and all those virtues that I had accredited him. What a courageuos man! I was very impressed!

Well, after I stumbled through my response and his puzzled reaction to what I had pieced together, he walks away disappointed, dejected even. I really felt for the guy.

Well, as he walks away with his head down and sad look on his face, I see that he is carrying jumper cables. It seems that my new courageous friend asked, "Hello, can I have a jump? !!!

I almost cried I was laughing so hard...in fact, I'm still laughing!!

LOL!!!

So I immediately roll the window down and as soon as my delicious order had come, I told him, between the fits of laughter, that I would help him and his friend. It was all I could do to not break out in laughter in front of these two guys, then they would think I was completely insane.

Well, I was unable to jump their car...I think the starter was fried.

Funny shit...!

That whole thing STILL makes me laugh. It wasn't so much his accent, but it's just what I heard. I would blame my ears more than his accent, actually.

Well, the rest of the deal was that as we connected the cables, a cab driver came to help us, as well. He wanted to try his own jumper cables and I was like, oh, ahem, excuse me...but *I* was helping these guys!!!

Apparently, he had some other eqiupment that they used to get the car started, I heard the cab driver allude to that. So they thanked me and I took off. Everything should be cool, though, the lights came on under the car's own power and it was gone this morning.

Oh, Mark, I think he was Chinese actually...not Japanese.

At first, I thought you made it up, coz no one in their right mind (even an asian with broken English) wouldn't ask a 4Runner driver for a job.
But Greg, that's just plain funny.
