I've traveled to most of the Caribbean....so take my words as good advice....
1)Bahamas has some of the WORST weather in the Caribbean. It's humid as hell.
2)Why Bahamas? IMHO, there is only one nice hotel in the Bahamas worth staying at, and that's the Atlantis, more specifically, the cove or the royal towers. However, it's EXTREMELY expensive and overpriced. They mug you every chance they get, including $20 burgers, etc. However, depending on your kids' age, they might eat for free. Beaches are not well maintained, not raked everyday, water is full of seaurchins (not something you want to deal with if you have kids, believe me.)
3)St Martin is a much nicer and calmer island. People are friendly, and lots of activities. If you want an amusement park, you may want to skip it though.
4)Have a look in Jamaica. Don't be scared of all the negative remark about Jamaica. Sure, it has horrible you will be killed spots, but you won't be near them. Most resorts have from hotel to resort transportation, so you won't even be NEAR the bad parts. Lots of good all inclusive resorts. BTW, Jamaica is THE island for all-inclusives, it is where the best ones are, due to the crime in Jamaica. Jamaica is geographically, one of the best islands. Have a look at Sandals whitehouse or Secrets St James. Both are GORGEOUS.
5)St Lucia is a beautiful volcanic island, with lots of cool stuff to see (nature wise) but again, it's not an amusement park.
6)Depending on the time of year, the Riviera Maya (mexico) is also one of the greatest (and cheapest) places in the Carribean. Great high end hotels (some of the best all inclusives) the best food in all of the Caribbean, and friendly people.
7)St Thomas....US Virgin Island, so you are still, technically, in the US. Beautiful beaches, beautiful nature....not as good as St Martin though.
8)Aruba, excellent climate, but only a few nicely developed hotels and the flight is much farther, so you may reconsider going there with kids.
9)Barbados....excellent Island, but IMHO, not worth the money over Jamaica if you just want fun/sun with kids and wife.
10)Dominican Republic (punta cana more specifically) Ok all inclusives, nice beaches, but it's close to the atlantic, so the water is cooler and isn't as calm as the other islands, but it's one of the cheapest.
11)Bermuda.....cooler water, but gorgeous island, and absolutely no crime.
Don't let the word "bahamas" fool you. It's been a long time since anyone (including the Atlantis group) invested any money down there, and the island is beginning to look run down. Beaches are dirty, tons of peddlers coming up to you and your family on the beach to sell you crap, just IMHO, unpleasant.
My personal advice? St Martin. Beautiful island, excellent food, gorgeous beaches, boat trips to St Barths, etc. My advice for all inclusives? Either Sandals Whitehouse or Secrets St. James. Any other questions, just ask.

The humidity was high, but it made it feel so good in the pools and when you got out of the pool you didn't feel cold.
If you do go, stop in Nassau somewhere before you get to Paradise island and buy some snacks/sodas/drinks at a grocery store. They'll save you some money, then tip someone to bring you a minifridge.

I want to take my kids (14 and 16) to the Bahama's for a quick 5-6 night trip in about 2 weeks.
Where to stay that is close to cool stuff, but is reasonable $. I know reasonable $ means a fair amount, but i don't mind paying if i am somewhere good.
I keep seeing the Atlantis commercials, but there are too many Atlantis hotels for me to figure out where to stay.
HELP.
thanks

How about a 2 bedroom beach house with air and private beach for $1200 a week?
Yeah, it's that good. http://homeaway.com is now my go-to for any destination, anywhere.
I used them for a trip to Paris last fall. I was able to get a clean and well equipped 2 bedroom flat in a fantastic area for 200 euros a night, not PP, per night. Between the 4 of us staying there, couldn't do it for twice that in a 2 star hotel.
AND I booked it one week in advance and only because all the hotels were full or charging 600 euros or more for a standard room.
Go there look around you will not believe or regret it.
Have fun! Love the bahamas and now that I've gone and looked at homeaway I may just have to go there soon

Here are some pics of the place I rented in Paris in October for 235 euros a night.

I've been to most of those places too. They are all as you describe, but for a family vacation I still think Atlantis trumps them (depending on the type of family vacation of course). All we did all day was go to the pools, lazy river, water coaster, waterslides. All this stuff is included with your stay at Atlantis. At night we walked around, went to 'the deep' huge indoor aquarium. A couple of days we went off property to have dinner or shop in Nassau.
