Default help! how do you get the smell of smoke out of my house!?!

hey all,

last night something horrible happened. while i was cooking some 'ass soup' (korean oxtail soup), i left the burner on.. i woke up in a sea of thick smoke! my entire house smells like sewage as well as all of my clothes and myself. i did about 20 loads of laundry - everything, curtains, clothes, bedding, etc. i scrubbed down the entire kitchen with bleach, pinesol and water (even had to remove the upper oven due to light fire damage). i also purchased a gang of candles and air fresheners. we have hardwood floors downstairs and carpeting upstairs (bedrooms). i sprinkled about 3 cans of that carpet fresh stuff, and it still stinks. granted its not as smelly as before, but when you walk into the house, you are still overpowered by the stench. it's a gut wrenching eye watering kinda thing.

oh, all our windows are open despite this god forsaken blizzard.

oh one more thing.. my roomate is a total jackass. he removed all the batteries from the smoke alarms.. im sure that this situation wouldnt have been so bad if the smoke detectors were working properly. i also received a citation from the fire marshall.. anyone have any idea how much this ticket will be?

stinkinly yours
brian

ahhh febreze....part of every blazer's kit of odor control. Brings back dorm memories

As far as this situation goes. I think you've done everything humanly possible to remedy the situation. Keep candles burning round the clock, and I guess only time will make it better. Try to open up every door/window/opening possible and let the place air out for days. heh

to get some circulation into the room. open one window at the end of the room and use a fan and use another fan at the other window (one fan blowing in, the other blowing out).

Here in Texas HEB (Grocery store) rents out steam cleaners. Whenever my gf's dogs pee on the carpet she breaks out a shampoo vacuum thing. You put shampoo on the carpet (or detergent) and run this thing over it. It picks up all the shampoo and stuff, seems to work pretty good. I would suggest trying that.

Rent an ozonator. It will oxidize the smoke byproducts that create the smell. You may have to leave for a day, but it will work wonders. We use these in the remodel business to get rid of fire smoke and mouse urine odors. Then again, move.
