take a lesson or two,
then practice, practice, practice...
no big "trick" to start boarding...

free style generally means the board is more flexible and shorter to do tricks or screwing around on the slopes. less stable in powder and at high speeds but easier to turn. These boards are used on small mountains or in snowboard parks to do tricks. A good learner board.

Free ride boards generally are a bit stiffer, and a bit longer. They are good for big mountain riding, powder etc.

Both these types of boards are twin tip, meaning both ends curve up so you can point the nose or tail down the hill. There's stuff that are free style/free ride, a board with a combination of features for both types of riding (big mountain, small mountain)

You should rent your equipment and ask for a good beginner board. Depending on your weight, you probably want a 135-145 size board.

As a beginner, equipment doesn't really matter. . . Just rent whatever they have at the slopes first until you get better before you make your purchase. . . The key to snowboarding control is to ride the edge of your board most of the time. . . If you are goofy foot (right foot forward) the easiest to learn is riding the edge behind you by diggin your heels into the snow. . . as you get better you can alternate the edge you ride on by shifting from heel to toe cutting back and forth. .. Just don't go down the hill flat on the board when on your first run or the VTEC will kick in 8-)

Also, learn on a powder day if possible - not an icy day.

Traditional bindings. No step-ins.

here's some advice from a newbie at snowbording...

basically i thought it'd be easy as hell, so me and all my friends all chose not to take lessons, and bah.. we had NO IDEA WHAT WE WERE DOING.. but taht's cuz we had NO EXPERIENCE, and everyone else we saw was either 1: laying on their face
2: speeding by..

anyway i eventually figured out how to do it.. faster than my friends but yea... depends if u wanna fall on ur face or ur ass.. i'd rather land on my ass... and try to fall towards the peak of the mountain (backwards).. that way its less of a fall.. basically since the mountain is sloped

this way

and ur standing

| this way

if u fall -> that way, it'll hurt more than if u fall
<-that way =-P

iunno.. its just learning it.. *shrug* but yea, take lessons
