How come Tivo doesn't offer a HD DVR for satellite?

Because the satellite companies won't let them. They can't do it without the cooperation of the satellite companies. My Tivo HD works great with cable cards, though I realize that not all cable companies are as good as mine.

Yeah, many of the service providers wanted to offer their OWN DVR, so they get the money rather than Tivo. Too bad all the ones I've used, or talked to other people about, basically suck.

They did (for DirecTV) and I own one. It is no longer offerred. Also, when recording satellite, it records only the satellite channel data stream. It also records the off the air digital data stream for local channels. It was an RCA product. It is not compatible with MPEG-4, though.
