in high school any fights would get stopped immediately. nhl is pretty much what you saw, though no one usually gets knocked out...it's like they get tired of punching and the refs close in and break it up.

i didn't play or watch college hockey, so i'm not sure what the standard is. nice punch!

refs only stop fights if one person is getting the s**t beat out of them, one/both fighters go down on the ice, and if it's a large group of players pushing each other (usally after a save or stoppage of play). If it's a one on one fight they let it go (my theory is the refs don't want to risk getting punched in the face).

It's up to the refs really. Most times they'll let it go but at the game I went to the other night they broke it up almost immediately. Big scrums get broken up quickly as do fights where a player gets knocked down (as BK said). I'm all for it. Hockey can be a frustrating game and fighting is a part of it (gotta be hand-to-hand though, none of the bullshit slashing with the stick or cheap shots).

I love the fact that fighting is allowed in Hockey. Best part is being at a game where fights break out. I've been to a couple bench clearing brawls.. i mean games. Heck we had (Florida Panthers) 2 big "enforcers" that faught all the time (Paul Laus & Peter Worrell) and most of the time fights are only stopped when a player hits the ice. This means even if you are taking off each others jerseys (which is common) and your knee goes down. Fights automatically stopped.

I think fighting has been stopped more frequently before it escalates because of some bad seeds in the bunch.

haha...you wacky Americans. You guys need to watch more hockey!

Like everybody said, refs step in at their discretion. Bobushka is right, at the NHL level refs are told to let them go because it's not worth getting punched in the face, especially by some of these monsters in the NHL. Fighting is a part of hockey, always will be, despite what some people say. You have one of the most physical sports in the world, you pay them 7 figures to win, then arm them with sticks. You think fights aren't going to happen?

Fights are the only good thing about hockey.

Do hockey teams have cheerleaders?
Because that would be the second best thing about hockey.
