Default Holy smokes! 3G mobile in Japan.

I just saw a CNN coverage on the 3G DoCoMo just released, and it's got camera mounted on the cell phone and you can actually do "video phone"!

wow!

Except they were supposed to release it back in April but had technical problems. Nobody is sure if they've got it fixed and even their own sales forecasts aren't exactly stunning. They need some killer apps to spark interest - something that I am helping them with

$800 ? ? ? No thanks !

Nice technology, but no market.

"................The NEC handset costs about 66,500 yen ($560), with the Panasonic version, which can also be used as a video camera, retailing for 95,700 yen ($800).

"The benefit of being first is very important for know-how," he said, estimating that Japan Telecom's mobile branch, J-Phone, with the assistance of the UK's Vodafone, would enter the market next.

But the industry is also very cautious, as mobile internet services have been slow to get off the ground.

Europe's Wap phones, which offer slower internet access, have not been a huge hit.

Even in Japan, DoCoMo's mobile internet service i-mode - an advanced mobile data service offering e-mail, games and web browsing - generates only 10% of DoCoMo sales................"

I assume you use these phones with a headset - if not, I don't fancy getting a video camera close up of the inside of someone's ear

At least they have the 3G technology. I heard that the US isn't going to go that route.

Can't wait for 3G to hit NA.

You have to think of it as more than "phone", its going to bring the real wireless applications to light.

My company has a fully featured IP Softphone ready for the Pocket OS, VoIP over 64k with QoS, we have more portal apps as well as some CRM stuff, unified messaging and VPN.

All of those applications will be enabled with more reliable wireless bandwidth.

Can't wait.
