I would love to get a chance to ride a Clydesdale one day. They are incredibly gorgeous animals.

I saw an ad for a Shire gelding for sale in Florida: 20 hands high! That's 6' 8" (203 cm) at the withers (high point on the shoulder). The top of his head must be 10' off the ground! (The ad didn't say whether he came with a trampoline for mounting and dismounting.)

Watt invented the horsepower. He was working at a mine, and was using horses to haul ore or coal (I forget which) up to the surface using block and tackle. He defined a horsepower as the unit of power an average-sized horse would expend pulling 330 pounds of coal 100 feet in a minute, or doing 33,000 foot-pounds of work in one minute. Yes, it makes little sense.

In his honor, the SI unit of power was named the Watt, and is equivalent to 1/746 of a horsepower.
