Default how accurate is Carfax?

Hey guys, i'm selling a car that i have owned since 01. When the person ran a Carfax on it, it stated that the last transfer was in 03? We bought the car used and paid it off cash.

Why do you think this is so? I know that we did not transfer the title in any way since I purchased it.

The only think i can think of is the pink slip states that is was purchased in 01 and under the "issue" it says 03.

Anybody run into this same situation?

hard to determine the bad from the post but you might want to research and or fix this error thingy.
-phone call to the state registration office
-email carfax

carfax is not accurate, its like the old hard wire fax machines.

Carfax is a reporting service that is "after the fact" This means they report against things that are easily available (read public record) or sent to them. They're the largest player in that game, so they end up with the most information which is why everyone uses them, but as you've seen, it isn't always accurate.

a knowledgeable buyer would pass on this situation.
if you want a small hobby buy a car with a phucked title, then try to resolve it after the fact.

If an accident wasn't reported and someone made repairs without a shop it won't show up...

I dont think it has anything to do with accidents.

I have owned the car since 2001, no change of names, titles, etc. Now that I am trying to sell it, the buyer ran a carfax and it shows that the title was changed in 03. I never did anything to the title and obviously didn't sell it. So I'm a bit confused, just curious if anybody has ran into this situation before......

visit your state registration office and get it fixed.
have them issue a text on what they found.

I think you answer your own question in the post. I would try to get a hold of whoever I needed to, to verify that the information on record with the state is correct. Show the interested buyer that and say F*@k Carfax.

Its cause you paid the car off in 03 and then the bank transfered the title to you.

Carfax is great... If you sell cars. I does a great job of reporting chain of title and reported accidents, but the majority of the cars I've sold with paintwork dont show it on carfax.
