Default How do I get rid of Windows Messenger?

I brought this up before and tried doing a search, but couldn't find the thread. Anyway I need a program to disable this Windows Messenger garbage. I'm also having problems with my router and I'm forced to connect to the internet without any protection from viruses (only Norton Antivirus running). Is there a free program I can download to put a firewall on my system? Thanks for the help.

uhhh.. uninstall msn messenger.. it should be in the add/remove list.. as far as firewall and such.. depends what OS your running.. some like XP have a generic firewall you can enable.. if not.. theres a free one called zonealarm.. zonealarm.com to get it.. if i remember right..

For XP and 2000
C:winntinfsysoc.inf
Edit the file.
Remove all of the "hide" from each line. Leave the commas.

Then Add/Remove Programs and Windows Components.

Messenger should show up to remove then.

Use at your own risk, blah, blah.

I was using Sygate Personal Firewall for a while with good results. Prior to that I was using Tiny Personal Firewall. Both were free and found at download.com if you're interested.

Currently I'm using the firewall that came with Norton Antivirus. Not as happy with it, so I may disable it and go back to one of the other two...
