I know there is an old scam with window companies..... "you'll save 50% of your heating bill", etc...... but why don't people just call home depot and ask them to give them a quote to make sure they aren't getting ripped by the window sales guy?

The relatives in my other thread just paid $6,000 for a 3 pane bay window in their house.... it was just a window replacement... the house had a bay window.... $6k and the dicks didn't even finish the woodwork on the inside.....

it is supposedly 3 pieces of glass thick or something like that..... I can't imagine anyone paying $6k for a $1k (guessing) window!

if you actually knew how much the glass costs you would throw a fit.

i know people who owns glass factories, and the markup on glass with anything else on it (markings, frame, decorations, etc.) are simply incredible.

And, to top off the irony, the ad showing at the bottom of my screen says "Replacement Windows - Great deals from companies near you".

One of my clients is a large window company. He started it because of how shady the window business is. It's worse than used cars.

Some dealers in town charge whatever they feel the homeowner can absorb. The window may be $400 for me, but the guy in a nice neighborhood in the 750k house, the same window is $900 for him.

we had a friend who used to sell windows and siding... he was a great friend, but i have no idea how he could sleep at night. Just like "Ubetit" said, he would charge whatever he could.

I just bought nice replacement windows for just over $120 each and paid a guy $50.00 to install each one. He didn't do the best job, but that was much better than some asshole charging me $600 installed for the same damned window.....plus they probably would have done the same quality of work anyway.

My 'rents paid $8,500 to get 12 regular sized windows, 1 large window, and 2 small windows replaced.

Talk about a deal.

Wait a year and see what happens. You know... like in the salesman's speech...

"In a year these puppies will pay for themselves."

I'm still waiting for my money.

in the thousands of percent.

glass, in case you didn't know, is CHEAP, sold by the pound (or kilogram). but anytime you put ANY kind of modification on it, it's expensive.

i'm not saying the markup is wrong by the way, the markup is there to cover distribution, loss (up to 20%), waste (8~10%), storage, and the little labor it takes to make a hole in the mirror or cutting it smaller.

I have no idea why "window replacement" is such a scam industry though. There has to be lots of competition, so any semi smart person would get a couple of quotes...... i guess dickhead salesman use some pressure "offer only good if you sign in the next 5 minutes"??

I have seen $10k of windows go into a house in the city that was originally worth about $20k and after the windows was worth about $22k.
