Japan's Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi has failed to win backing from the opposition to allow Tokyo to offer support to the U.S.-led anti-terror campaign.

seems there's some decent turmoil over there. this is also the PM that openly visits the war shrine to pray for kamikaze pilots who gave their lives. war is explicitly rejected in their constitution remember...

Remember, Japan has a home force only! What type of support were they talking about anyway?

Their constitution, basically instituted by the U.S. after WWII, prohibits anything but a home defense force I believe.

I think the Prime Minister wanted to provide some type of military force for help, instead of just providing money like they did during Desert Storm. I don't think it was going to be a fighting military, but support troops instead to help out. I think a lot of the other asian nations are still worried about Japan having an active military.
